Robert William Gaul, known to family and friends as Bill, and to business associates as Bob, died on November 4, 2011, at the age of 81. A San Francisco native, he was born to Selma and Bill Gaul and grew up in the Excelsior, attending Guadalupe School. He graduated from Saint Ignatius High School , Class of 1948 where he was Student Body President, and Santa Clara University, Class of 1952. He began his engineering career with GE and Hiller Aircraft. The longtime president of Adhesive Engineering in San Carlos, he co-founded Chemco Systems, Inc. in 1993. He was instrumental in the company's expansion into China, and travelled there frequently. He enjoyed world-wide travel for business and pleasure, sharing his experiences when the family gathered. Bill also enjoyed his more than 50 years as a member of the Olympic Club. He served as a board member at Mercy High School, Burlingame and Saint Joseph's Seminary in Menlo Park. He was a parishioner at St. Bartholomew's Church for more than 45 years, where he frequently served as a lector.
Bill shared a 53 year marriage with Carolyn Gaul (nee Campbell). Together they had 5 children: Katie (John Davis), Mike (Donna), Matt (Anna), Claire (Dave Brown), Bart (Carol). Being an only child, he reveled in his 12 grandchildren: AJ, Tim, Jeff Davis; Colin, Fiona, Aidan, Erris Gaul; Chris, Kim Gaul; Campbell Brown; and Breanna, Jack Gaul.
Most important to Bill was family and his enjoyment was obvious when we were gathered. He established a "recipe" for family which we will continue to follow.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Nov 11th at 10:30 AM at St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church in San Mateo. Friends and family may visit Thursday evening from 6:30 - 7:00 PM at Crosby N. Gray, 2 Park Rd. Burlingame. Vigil Service at 7:00 PM.
The family asks that anyone wanting to send a remembrance please send it to either Saint Ignatius College Preparatory, San Francisco, or Santa Clara University, or The Sister Mary Petronilla and Sister Mary Kevin Gaul endowment Scholarship Fund at Mercy High School, Burlingame, CA.
