Obituary

Larraine, loving spouse of Paul and mother of Sydney passed away on October 19, 2019 a few days shy of her 60th birthday after a long battle with brain cancer. Larraine helped pioneer a groundbreaking clinical trial at Stanford with great success, extending her life well beyond the normal life expectancy for this ugly disease. We as her family are grateful for the extra years, and the medical community at Stanford learned a lot from her treatment. Others will benefit from her bravery in experimenting with new treatments.
Larraine led a wonderful life – full of animals and adventure.
Many animals (dogs, horses, cats and countless smaller furry creatures) benefited from her love and kindness. But her horses were her passion, and she leaves behind a herd that loves her back and a daughter who is equally equine obsessed.
She travelled the world – setting foot on every continent other than the cold of Antarctica (after 30 years in Boston, she finally escaped the cold to return to her sunny California – she hated the cold!). She travelled in a range of styles – from bathing in ice-covered creeks while on horseback in the outback of Australia and camping in the wilderness of Africa – to cruising the Mediterranean on a 120-foot power cruiser. She preferred the latter! But most of all, she loved Africa, where the combination of her love of photography and love of animals came together. We treasure the awesome pictures of wildlife at rest and in action that she has left us. Her love of the arts extended beyond photography – she was a painter, an architect, a gardener – she excelled at anything involving creativity. Thankfully, she has passed that creative spirit to her daughter.
But mostly, Larraine was about friendships. There are many who consider Larraine a good friend – in some cases, a best friend. She was always there when needed – a listening ear, a glass of something, some helpful advice, a friend, a rock to lean on. Many will miss her.
Her family loves her, and she remains forever in our hearts and thoughts. She has left too early, but has made her mark on this world. Be at peace, and rest now knowing the impact you have had and the love you have left behind.
