Obituary for Charlotte Ohlund Refvem

July 12, 1926 - December 5, 2018
San Carlos, California | Age 92

Charlotte Refvem passed peacefully from a full life as a wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and loyal friend. Most recently she lived in San Carlos, but had called Burlingame home for more than fifty years.

Charlotte is survived by her four children - Jim Refvem (Mary), Cathy Aydelott (Mike), Bill Refvem (Joanna), and Karen Chandler (Dave). She was 'Gram' to her grandchildren Evan Aydelott, Jamie Refvem, Lindsay Kovner, Will Refvem, Kate Templeton, Sandy Refvem, Kelly Carney, Emma Refvem, Maggie Ates, Jill Refvem, Charlotte Refvem, and Jake Trevithick. She was also blessed with numerous great grandchildren.

Born at Mills Hospital in San Mateo, Charlotte and her late brother Eric Ohlund were raised in San Mateo and Burlingame. She graduated from San Mateo High School and Stanford University, earned a teaching credential from San Francisco State University, and later taught at West Hillsborough School.

She and her beloved late husband, Don Refvem, traveled widely and especially enjoyed memorable family time in the home they built in Arnold. There, she organized family sing-alongs, joined every card game, and famously lead the raucous July 4th parade around the living room.

Whether doing needlework, chronicling the family activities in scrapbooks, or participating in one of her favorite groups (among them PEO Chapter CX, Masterworks Chorale, and the 'Unabridged' Group), Charlotte's life exuded fun, creativity, laughter, and song. Her active faith led her to several churches over the years: First Methodist Church of Burlingame, First Baptist Church of Burlingame, and First Presbyterian Church of Burlingame.

Most would say that Charlotte was distinguished by her joy, light, and kindness. She was loved by many and will be missed by all.

The family sincerely thanks the loving staff at Retirement Plus of San Carlos.

Family and friends will gather for a memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mission Hospice and Home Care in San Mateo.
