Obituary for Barbara Eleanor Steiner

September 30, 1927 - November 18, 2018
Burlngame, California | Age 91

Barbara Parker Steiner passed away, peacefully at the age of 91, on November 18, 2018. From the day she was born, on September 30th, 1927 to the day she died, she embraced life with a vigor and resilience that was the underpinning of her good health, vitality and infinite strength.
Barbara was the daughter of John Everett and Mary Celia (Conway) Parker. She was the youngest of three children, her oldest brother, John Charles, and then James Edward Parker. She grew up on Bloomfield Road in Burlingame during the depression, and although life was difficult in the 1930's, Bloomfield Road was alive with camaraderie, kinship, and a little mischief with her lifelong childhood friends, which was all reported through neighborhood edition of the Bloomfield Bugle.
In 1947 Barbara started a modeling career at Ransohoffs in San Francisco. Her poise and elegance graced the runway showing off the latest couture of the era.
In May of 1950, she and her close friend, Pat Lewis decided to try out some new surroundings and moved to Los Angeles. Barbara continued her modeling career with her experienced stride on the runway at Robinsons only to catch the eye of a budding professor, George Steiner, who swept her off the runway and into his arms. They were married in 1953.
George and Barbara had four children, Kathryn Cecilia, Mary Theresa, James Everett, and John Thaddeus. Kathy and Mary were born in Detroit, Michigan while George taught at Wayne State University. Longing for the sunshine of California and her family, George and Barbara moved back to Burlingame where Jim and John were born. George started teaching at San Francisco State where he obtained his Ph.D. and taught for 30 years.
Through the years of raising a family of four, Barbara earned her Real Estate License and began a part-time career. She managed this alongside a busy household, wrangled with teenagers, boyfriends, and girlfriends, broken hearts, broken windows, college tuition, eventually weddings and was blessed with 7 grandchildren; Patrick James, John Donald, Owen Conway, Monica Ann, Roy James, John Robert, and Haley Marie.
George passed away in 2004 and Barbara grounded herself in her home, surrounded by family, her loving friends, and good neighbors. Her daily walks on the promenade around Ray Park made her a notable figure where she was admired for her stature and determination. She claimed walking was the secret to her long, healthy life.
Her house was filled with the memories and the aroma of many holiday dinners, textures of finely refinished furniture from George's handiwork, and the spirit of Barbara Parker Steiner who lived a long, purposeful life based on her values of love, loyalty, and honor.
