Tribute & Message From The Family

John Robert McGee, Sr. passed away peacefully with his family at his side on February 17, 2021. He was the youngest child of Robert Joseph (preceded) and Lorraine O'Rourke McGee (preceded) and is survived by his wife of 37-years, Mary (Morasci); his two children, John Robert, Jr. (Jillian Hamels) and Anne Bonnington; siblings Sheila, Daniel (Karen) and Nance McGee. John was "Poppy" to grandson, Graham and a beloved Uncle and brother in-law.

Born and raised in Burlingame, John graduated from Junipero Serra High School (1975). He graduated from University of Pacific (1979) and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. John recently retired from Franklin Templeton Investments after a distinguished 36-year career.

John enjoyed traveling and was an avid golfer. He was a longtime member of the Olympic Club where he played frequently with his family and friends. He loved to sing and had a passion for music. He enjoyed his time when he was a member of The Family Club where his fellow campmates occasionally allowed him to take the mic or act in skits.

John was proud of his Irish heritage. Soon after retiring he traveled to Ireland for a golf trip with his son and friends. In between rounds of golf, he visited his maternal grandmother's town of Youghal, County Cork and learned more about his ancestry.

John had a zest for life. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and jovial spirit. He was adored by his family and friends and will be missed greatly. The family wishes to thank Dr. Julia Carnavale and Dr. Richard Jordan for their compassionate care.

A private service is planned with a celebration of life to follow on a later date once it is safe for people to gather. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in John's memory to the UCSF Foundation, P.O. Box 45339, San Francisco, CA 94145. Please note "Dr. Julia Carnevale's Research" in the memo line.

I am deeply saddened to hear this news. John and my brother Jim were best friends in grammar school years on the 70s and John was a frequent presence in the Venturino household. In later years, I would run in to John at the Olympic Club where I was a member from 1980 to 2006. I know my brother Jim holds John in high regard and will treasure the memories they created together in their youth. Peace to the Magee family. As long as you live, and as long as you hold John in your memory, he is alive.

I just heard of John's passing and I'm so sad that he left his earth far too early. I knew John as part of our high school group (a bunch of Mercy and Serra kids). Years ago, we hung out as a large, eclectic group, having fun, laughing and spending time in friendship. While we did not stay connected into our adult lives, John's marriage to Mary felt so connected as he married my most favorite Art teacher from Mercy. Even though time passed, when I saw John, I felt a historical connection, one that defined time. My niece and Annie are dear friends and I know that the McGee family is surrounded by loving friends to care take this time of life. I send my prayers, good memories and thoughts to enjoy each day, for we never know if tomorrow is here.
Blessings,

John and I were classmates at Serra High School (Class of 1975). Though we ran in different social circles, I remember him as smart, great sense of humor, and an around good person. My condolences to the McGee family during this very difficult time. RIP.

So sad to here of the passing of John. I was a classmate of his at OLA and Serra HS. During our Freshmen year I would get a ride to school with John from his sister in her VW Bug. Seemed like everyday we would hear Rod Stewart's "Maggie May" (1971) and I always think of those days when I hear it. I loved his humor and was a good friend. RIP

My sincere condolences to the McGee family, fraternity brothers, and close friends. Had fond memories of John at Serra. He was a hoot and could always elicit laughter during a few awkward times. Here’s to the 19th hole, John.
