Tribute & Message From The Family

Josephine Fassio Spano passed away peacefully on November 22. Josephine or "Josie" to all who knew her was born and raised in San Francisco, attending Commerce High School. Josie loved to tell stories of growing up and walking all over San Francisco. She worked for the State of California before marrying Samuel Spano in1956. They started their family on Kissling Street in SF where Anne Marie, Janet and Richard were born.

In 1968, Josie and Sam moved to Burlingame. Josie loved to cook classic Italian meals, was self taught and always in an apron. Her gnocchi and ravioli were hand made delicacies. She enjoyed her garden, especially her geraniums, and all the neighborhood activity. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Angels Church and later when getting out was difficult would watch the Catholic masses on TV.

Josie has spent a long and full life surrounded by people who loved her. She was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, great grandmother, and a friend to many. She is pre-deceased by her brother Julian Fassio, sister Florence Ghio and husband Sam. She is survived by daughters Anne Marie (Piero) of Italy, Janet Steiner (Jim) of Burlingame and Richard (Adria) of Gilroy. She is survived by niece Nancy Roberts, and nephews Ken and Steven Fassio. Josie had a very close bond with her niece Barbara Gross who she talked to regularly and nephew Johnny Ghio who loved visiting with her for lunch.

Josie faced many obstacles in her life with the loss of her mother at an early age, yet she developed a strong relationship with her family. She talked to her children daily and she looked forward to her cell phone ringing.

The family would like to thank Atria in Burlingame for providing comfort and care for her these last few months. There will be a private burial at the Italian Cemetery. Donations can be made in memory of Josie to your charity of choice.

Condolence & Memory Journal

Anne Marie, Janet, and Richard,
I remember as a childhood friend of Anne Marie in San Francisco going to your house to play on the swing. Your Mom was very loving and kind.
May God Bless you all
