Tribute & Message From The Family

It is with deep sorrow that the family announces that our beloved sister, aunt, godmother, and friend, Roza Maria Katowitsch passed away on September 30, 2019 at the age of 61 in Castro Valley, California, surrounded by those that love her, after living three years with stage 4 brain cancer.
Roza was born on February 5, 1958 in Detroit, Michigan to Lida and Alexander and left as soon as she could for California. She was an electrician by trade, a tremendous gardener, an avid jogger, a voracious reader, and a Seinfeld aficionado.

Roza loved sushi, champagne cocktails, sodoku, her signature fragrance (cigarettes and Chanel #5), instant coffee from Trader Joes, David Bowie, children, animals, and her car…one of the first Honda Civics off the assembly line and driven well past its expiration date. She despised the question 'How are you?', doctors, Donald Trump, truffles, bananas for some inexplicable reason, and any conversation that included the possibility of leaving the Bay Area.
She excelled at keeping orchids alive, 10 hour conversations, telling it like it is, making people laugh, avoiding the cell phone "trend", and telling you exactly how you should be doing...well just about anything.

Her regrets are few but include not telling more people about the time David Bowie locked eyes with her during a concert, every age after turning 25, cutting her hair into a pixie cut in the 80s ,and the time she accidentally gave a $50 bottle of wine to a homeless person.
We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Roza during her 61 years, among them: never stop learning, never allow other people's behavior to change who you are, always package up your leftovers at restaurants for a homeless person, and to stay strong and persevere...even when given a terminal cancer diagnosis. Our gratitude towards her for these lessons is as boundless as the Pacific Ocean.

She has left explicit instructions for those left behind to love each other and to drink champagne.

Roza was preceded in death by her loving partner Richard, parents Alexander and Lida, and sister Tamara.
She will be sorely missed and is survived by her sister Zina "Zinabee", her brother Vladimir (Marie), her godchildren Anastacia (Jered), Alexandra "Sunny" (Peter), Yelena (her favorite), her nephew Christopher, her grandnephew Nikolas, her grandniece Simone, best friend Donald, and numerous feral cats around the Bay Area.

A panikhida service will be held on October 2, 2019 at 6PM at the Church of All Russian Saints, 744 El Camino Real, Burlingame, CA 94010. A funeral service will be held on October 3, 2019 at 10AM at the Church of All Russian Saints, 744 El Camino Real, Burlingame, CA 94010. Burial will follow at her new place of residence, the Siberian Orthodox Cemetery, 1801 Hillside Blvd, Colma, CA 94014.

Roza would undoubtedly cherish the thought of having a smoking room named in her honor, but instead…memorial donations may be made in both Roza and Richard's memory to any homeless person you happen to see. Roza and Richard never walked by a person in need without giving them something…the best way to honor them is to do the same.
