Tribute & Message From The Family

The Giron Family would like to inform family and friends of the passing of their beloved Son Michael J. Giron. Michael leaves behind his loving mother Lydia Giron, brother Rick Giron, sister in law Laura (Jackson) Giron and niece Ashley Giron. He was preceded in death by his loving father Joseph S Giron and his brother Lloyd Giron.
Mike fought gallantly, with dignity and courage over this past year battling stage 4 liver and pancreatic cancer. He never lost sight of his commitment to his faith, his family and his friends. It is with a heavy heart that he will be greatly missed by all those who knew Big Mike.
After suffering a life-changing spinal cord injury in 1976, Mike went on to live a full life, graduating in 1981 from the University of California Berkeley sponsored computer-training program created to assist individuals with disabilities. He then went on to work for Hewlett-Packard, Varian Associates and as a contract programmer for IBM.
Michael will always be remembered for his leadership and stellar performance for the Burlingame High School football team. For that, Burlingame High Alumni honored Michael in 1997 by inducting him into the BHS Sports Hall of Fame.
Mike's zest for life and being an inspiration to all those who came in contact with him, led to the annual award that started in 2012. This award honors young athletes at Burlingame High School who excel not only on the field but also in their communities. This Award is aptly called The Michael J Giron "Never Give Up Award".
The ultimate acknowledgement of his football prowess and character came in 2014, when Burlingame High School ceremoniously retired his Jersey, number "76", from their football program in order to honor Michaels achievements.
Mike has lived in Santa Rosa for the past 18 years and has enjoyed spending the last couple of years being close to his brother Rick and his parents. His passion for life led him to hosting several fun themed events bringing his friends and family together. Mike always put his faith and family first, his friends second and he was always third.
There will be a Rosary, on March 1st, 2019 at 6:00pm at Crosby-N Gray Funeral Home in Burlingame. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday March 2nd 2019 at 1:30pm at St Catherine's Church in Burlingame.
Interment at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Santa Rosa, CA on Monday, March 4, 2019 at 1:30pm.

Condolence & Memory Journal

Mike's strength lives on in all of us. When you reflect on the name Mike Giron, you can't help but smile and feel warmth in your heart. Bigger than life is what we used to say about Mike and that is the truth. He is now and forever will be, "bigger than life." We miss you Mike but we carry on in your name and serve the legacy you created.

I had the pleasure of working with Mike as a Caregiver years ago. Mike hired me, knowing I was at Empire College training to be a medical assistant. He helped me with homework. He would quiz me at times. I learned some of the most valuable lessons in life from Mike. I have not, and will not, EVER forget Mike. I am extremely saddened by his passing. His family was his world. Such an amazing man. May you run with the angels my friend. Much love

I was a "wanna be" be Athlete back in the day when Mr Japps was on the mike, Coach Booker was in charge and the Panthers were battling it out on the field. Mike was an inspiration to me. He made me want to be part of the Tradition of Burlingame High School football. I remember big #76 being ALL OVER THE FIELD.

As I got older, I got to know Mike through my Brother Jack and playing in the Toilet Bowl.
Mike was a better "Man" than he was football player, and that is saying ALLOT!

I'd like to think He's up there in Heaven running free once again!!!

Mike's legacy will live on!

My sincerest condolences to the family and dear friends of Micheal. As an RN, I have had the honor and pleasure of taking care of Micheal over the last 14 years. Micheal and I had a wonderful rapport from day one and he will always hold a special place in my heart. He absolutely loved his life and was determined to live it to its fullest potential letting nothing get in his way. Micheal talked about his family often and would share wonderful, heart warming stories whether it be family gatherings, family trips and or the many adventures they shared over the years. His family was without a doubt his biggest joy.
I will miss Micheal and that beautiful infectious smile of his.

There are some people in the journey of life that will always be present in our world. Mike is one of those people. Maybe it was his bigger than life attitude or his calming strength that made us all connect to him. I do know this, we are all better for knowing Mike and so proud to be able to call him , "friend". I guess the best way to honor him is to continue on with the lessons he shared. Smile in the face or adversity, if challenged-get busy on a solution, never complain, always celebrate, lead with passion and strength and always value family and friends as they feed your soul with purpose and love. So as the physical Mike leaves us and continues on to his next journey, I can be joyous in the fact I was so fortunate to meet a "Mike" here on earth and it is now my honor to carry his legacy to those I come in contact with. Yes, we will miss your smile and always encouraging comments but we will never, ever forget Mr. Mike Giron, "Crazy Horse". Love you Mike. Thank you.

Gonna miss the legendary Mike Giron. Nicest guy ever with an infectious personality. Wouldve been at the services but under the weather. From the 67 fastback all the way to sharing laughs in B'game years later you were a true pillar of strength and light. The world is worse off without you. Alex Parr

Now here was a real man. Big, crazy strong, athletic and handsome. These were the least of Mike's qualities. What made Mike a man among men was this- a compassionate and caring spirit,a fierce loyalty to his family and friends, always putting others problems ahead of his issues. It is beyond my comprehension how Mike dealt with his overwhelming health issues and NEVER wallowed in self pity. Mike's gift to me was a forty five year friendship. I could ALWAYS count on Mike when I had problems in my life to truly listen and guide me with his wisdom. Mike had complete respect of all who knew him and taught us all what is important in life. I have two heroes in my life- Michael J. Giron and my father. I will miss Mike every day that I have left. Until we meet again my friend..

It is with the heaviest of heart I send my sympathy and love to Mrs. Giron, Ricky, Laura and Ashley. The Giron family and my family have been intertwined for decades as friends, neighbors, Mrs. Giron taught my brothers and I at St. Catherines, my brother Des was Mike's health aid for a few years in the mornings getting Mike ready for work. Our families enjoyed dinners together, parish picnics, family celebrations and surrounded the family with love when Mike became paralyzed. The memory of that time remains so vivid in my mind. As a little girl I had such a crush on the football stud who would walk the neighborhood during the Summer in shorts and his football jersey....a Mike sighting was a thrill. He was always flocked by his guy friends and very pretty girls, who were also crushing on football star Mike. I will never forget how beautifully the St. Catherines and Burlingame communities sprung into action to help the Giron family and Mike face the challenges of being wheelchair bound. I remember skating at a fundraiser at Yankee Doodle Dandy to raise money for equipment for Mike. I would go with Mrs. Giron on Saturdays to Royal Donut and the Broadway Meat Market to gather food for the incredible volunteers who were building the handicap accessible addition for Mike and outfitting the house with ramps. I would bring coffee to Gabe Friel, John Boyle and the many volunteers who worked every Saturday for I believe 4 months until the addition was complete as Mrs. Giron prepared meals for the volunteers. I remember vividly how loyal Mike's friends were and made sure he remained in the mix with them regardless of is handicap.

One of my best moments with Mike was when he had fallen in love...he lived near OLA and called to ask if I would cook a specific breakfast he had selected and drive it to his house so he could surprise his love with breakfast in bed. I prepared breakfast, lightly knocked on the door and Mike answered. He already had a tray on this lap with a rose, i placed breakfast on the tray and said good bye. I will never forget the joy in Mike's eyes and huge smile that he had pulled this off and would say he made her breakfast in bed. Yes, Mike was handicapped but it was not nor did it stop him from living life.

When I think of Mike's life I think of him as a "warrior of life". He faced so many health challenges after his accident but as we know he kept fighting back, his cancer battle shows just that....tell Mike one thing and he will respond on "his terms".....an amazing warrior you will always be in our hearts Mike.

It was such an honor to attend Mike's jersey retirement celebration at the Brewery and to see Mr. Mrs. Giron, Mike, Ricky and many dear family friends. I will cherish that visit, sharing stories and memory always. I will never forget the tears of joy and pride in Mr. Mrs. Giron's eyes that evening it was beautiful.

Mrs. Giron, you truly are an angel on earth. We have spoken several times over the past year and I will forever be in awe of your grace, amazing faith and courage. You have faced more in a lifetime then one person should and continue to inspire others with your love. I thank you for truly showing me regardless the challenge or heartbreak we must carry on. God bless you. I love you.

God Bless you Mike.

Love, Alannah Hurley Chase

Mike, thank you for loving us all the way you did and always bringing us together either at your lovely home or another venue! I've known you since St. Matthew's and St. Catherine's and your devotion to your friends and family was incredible! And it continues on, as you told me, that when you reach the other side, you will be trying to help us anyway you can! Love you Mike, thank you for being you! This is another favorite picture I took of you! ❤
